Smt. Rama Thyagarajan is a disciple of vidwan delhi shri. P. Sunderrajan and hails from the lineage of the legendary flautist Sri Sarabha Sastri and is known for her traditional and chaste music. She began her education on the fundamentals of carnatic music at the age of six from Shri Karur D.Krishnamoorthy. She continued her learning under the tutelage of Shri Neyveli R. Santhanagopalan and from Shri Thiruvaiyaru Gopalakrishnan ( Direct Disciple of Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer). She has given many concerts in India and in the San Francisco Bay Area.
She released a CD to raise funds for Shiva Murugan Temple in Concord, CA. In 2005 Rama Thyagarajan and her students conducted a fundraising program for the Cancer Institute (WIA) Foundation benefiting Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai. She has also released a Commercial CD called “Pahi Rama”, which is a presentation of kritis on Lord Rama by different composers. She has performed thematic presentations with several other Bay Area music teachers in addition to singing for several dance programs. Rama is also a board member on the Maarga-Chennai team, which is an organisation founded by Vidwan Sri. Delhi P. Sunderrajan to promote talented youth musicians and give them a platform to perform in Chennai during the December Music Festival.
Smt. Rama Thyagarajan is the Founder and Artistic Director of “Sathguru Vidyalaya”, a Silicon Valley music school. She has been teaching carnatic music classes in the Bay Area for the past 25 years. Rama’s school Sathguru Vidyalaya has been widely successful in imparting knowledge of Carnatic music to youth for the past 25 years, and is continuing to grow and spread this knowledge. Rama has led her school in performing many thematic presentations such as Pahi Rama, SivaSakthi, Gurubhyo Namaha, Svanubhavam, etc. Many of her students have also given solo performances and arangetrams in addition to being a part of their schools’ group programs. Sathguru Vidyalaya runs annual workshops conducted by high profile musicians in order to enrich knowledge of Carnatic music.
